essential safety gear for pest control

When it comes to pest control, working with hazardous chemicals can be risky for your health – which is why it’s so important to have the correct safety gear. We take a look at essential protective equipment that every pest control expert should be decked out in. Remember, the aim is to exterminate the bugs, not yourself!

While we wish we could don a Ghostbusters uniform and look as cool as Dan Aykroyd, pest control safety gear isn’t quite as stylish. However, we can assure you that it’s definitely more protective.

Gloves

A durable pair of long PVC gloves might seem like old news but there’s a reason why they’ve been around for so long – they work! These trusted old friends are essential on any job, and we recommend that they reach at least three-quarters of the way up your forearm for splashback protection. They also feature non-slip finger grip patterns and a cotton lining; there’ll be no butterfingers happening in these!

Respirator

These masks might remind you of a few choice horror movies, but contrary to popular belief, they aren’t used solely for the purpose of scaring the socks off film buffs. A respirator will protect your lungs from potentially harmful airborne chemicals while spraying. If you’re prone to asthma, this is a definite recommendation.

Poison signs

Correctly labelling chemicals is extremely important. Mixing the wrong chemicals can result in extremely harmful consequences. Magnetic poison signs are easy to reuse when alternating storage containers and adhere reliably to metal surfaces.

Measuring Jug

A measuring jug may be the most underrated safety tool around. A measuring jug is essential when mixing chemicals, and finding the correct portions is crucial to obtain the right chemical balance. Make sure you get your hands on a durable measuring jug that is suitable for a variety of caustic chemicals. Having a handle with non-slip grip features is also a good idea when handling heavy quantities.

Spill Kit

A pest control experts’ bag of tricks – and a real life-saver! Chemical spills require immediate attention and this kit has everything you’ll need to isolate the chemical and rectify the situation. The bag itself is fluro orange, so you’ll never lose it!

It contains:

  • PVC gloves
  • Dustpan and brush
  • Large absorbent pads
  • 15L bag of organic absorbent material
  • Absorbent snake
  • Tough disposal bags

Overalls

Dermal absorption is one of the most overlooked types of contamination. Airborne spray particles and splashes onto the skin are often not easily noticed. Protection should include wearing overalls, and a face shield. The face shield or safety glasses should also be worn when drilling concrete as part of a subterranean termite barrier installation.

You may not be doing something as dangerous as exterminating ghosts, but in pest control, you’re still doing a service to the community. Keep yourself safe in the process and make sure you have these essentials when you’re out on the job!
