Port Douglas
Located just over an hour north of Cairns, Port Douglas is an iconic Queensland destination. There are countless fishing charters and self-driven boat hire options spoiling you for choice on the fishing front. But the boat tours don’t stop there, stay on the water by surprising the missus with snorkelling or scuba diving! Options range from the low isles to the outer reef and speed boats to catamarans. It’s entirely up to you how you would like to explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Back on land, there are some of the most luxurious accommodation options in Northern Queensland, keeping everyone content and pampered.
Moreton Island
Moreton Island is a 4WD enthusiast’s dream with sandy tracks to beaches around the island all with the added bonus of great fishing potential. Moreton Island is known for its clean white sand, shipwreck snorkelling and dolphin feeding. If your partner is more of a thrill-seeker, you can even sled down the massive sand dunes! Accommodation on Moreton Island ranges from resort to camping meaning there’s something for everyone’s taste.
Baroon Pocket Dam
Hidden away in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, between Montville and Maleny, lies Lake Baroon. You are almost guaranteed to snag a bite at this dam fishing hotspot! In 2017/18, the dam was stocked with a mix of over 14,700 Australian Bass and Mary River Cod. It is important to do your research before you set out on your trip to Lake Baroon as permits and restrictions do apply to this location. The surrounding areas of Maleny and Montville are jam-packed with activities like the cheese factory, wineries, markets and national parks and both Maleny and Montville have camping and hotel-style accommodation.
Whitsundays
There is far more to the Whitsundays than the beautiful white-sand beaches. Though the scenery is sure to keep the wife happy, the fishing potential will be what is putting a smile on your face. If you haven’t been to this location before, we recommend tagging along with a charter boat tour due to the heavy restrictions of environmentally protected areas and fish populations. You can stay on the Whitsunday Islands however, this can be quite pricey. A more affordable option, close to the marina with many boat charter tours, is Airlie Beach. There is even a lagoon at Airlie Beach for the whole family to safely swim in, even during the Irukandji season.
